FIRE ANTS!

Spring has nearly sprung, and soon we will hear the crying of children who have been attacked by one of the meanest little creatures on Earth—THE FIRE ANT! Having been brought by ship to Georgia, these travelers have spread across 27 states by my last count and it may be more.

These are fascinating creatures. They are aggressive and very inventive about the problems of survival.

Originally each Ant hole was for one tribe only. Ants from a neighboring hole were attacked and killed. Some how, they have learned this is not in their best interests. In fact, they tunnel the ground between the nests, and instead of having only one Queen per nest, as many as 25 have been found.

Anyone who has not been bitten by a Fire Ant, cannot begin to imagine the pain it causes. If you were touched by a wire that was red hot, it would give you an idea, but, imagine a little child getting into a nest of them and being bitten many times!

The Chemical people have created hundreds of highly toxic products to solve the problem but so many of the little creatures survive that there is no shortage of them. In fact the real damage of the chemicals is to the environment and all the little creatures that live there. The ants remain, and those that do not die start the process of becoming immune, so next time you must get a different product because the first will not work.

These Chemical products constantly cause more problems than they eliminate, but it serves the purpose of giving the chemical industry the opportunity to constantly bring out “new” products that people rush to try—and they do not work either!
