Perma-Guard™ produces a line of insecticides based upon ground Diatomaceous Earth (DE), freshwater type amorphous silica with a crystalline content of less than one half of one percent. The deposit from which Perma-Guard™ draws the Diatomaceous Earth for our insecticide products was chosen for the consistency of the diatoms in the deposit. Salt water deposits consist of many different types of diatoms which are often thin and fragile. If the diatoms are not the correct shape, are fragile or the deposit contains clay or other unwanted sediment it is not as effective in an insecticide formulation.
Perma-Guard™ insecticides kill by physical action, not chemical. First, by penetrating the waxy protective cuticle of the insect and then, as Diatomaceous Earth is a dessicant, by absorbing the insect’s body fluids.
Why add anything more?
Since Diatomaceous Earth kills mechanically and therefore slowly it was necessary to add other ingredients in order to control infestations where the insects multiply fast.
Pyrethrins - The second ingredient in Perma-Guard™ Insecticides is a vegetable, digestible extract from a variety of Chrysanthemum flower commonly known as the African Daisy. It is one of the oldest insecticides known with evidence of its use dating back to ancient Egypt. It is still one of the most effective.
Pyrethrins are some of the safest ingredients available, especially when one expects ingestion may occur such as in areas where animals live. Note: Pyrethrin is NOT the same as Permethrin. Permethrin is a synthetic pyrethrin, and is less easily broken down than pyrethrin. Pyrethrins can be used on cats; permethrins or pyrethroids, (also synthetic) should NOT be used on cats.
Pyrethrins act to irritate the bug, causing the bug to become active, allowing the Diatomaceous Earth to work more quickly.
Pyrethrin is deadly to insects and other cold-blooded life. It is known for its fast knock-down action but its value is reduced by the fact that it evaporates in just minutes. It works well in the Perma-Guard™ formula which gives it a TIME RELEASE capability.
Piperonyl Butoxide (PBO) - The third active ingredient was first discovered in the Sassafras plant. It is a synergist which magnifies the effect of the Pyrethrins. Without it ten times more Pyrethrins would be needed making the formula cost prohibitive.
As the Pyrethrins and PBO become inactive three months after application our products do not contain persistent chemicals harmful to the environment and to higher forms of life. Perma-Guard™ products are a much needed revolution for pest control as they provide a good alternative to conventional chemicals. Moreover, on any surface, Perma-Guard™ Insecticide products have a remarkable repellency factor. As long as it is present, insects tend to stay away, making a serious infestation unlikely. Also, the more it is used, the more an environment is created that tends to make insects feel unwelcome.
